Canal
Maintenance
In February
2002 the City hired Sea Systems Corporation to conduct a bathymetric
survey of the City’s canals. Upon completion of the survey, Sea Systems
Corporation identified twenty-three (23) canals that needed to be
dredged. The degree to which the canals needed to be dredged varied by
location.
Following the
survey, a Canal Maintenance Plan was developed that is based
upon a priority ranking described below with Priority I canals
being addressed first followed by the remaining canal systems,
Priority Areas II through V. Priority Area I received funding in
FY 2003. Each of the following priority areas will be funded
over the next several fiscal years in their respective order
(For the amount of funding appropriated per year, please see the
City’s Five Year Capital Improvement Plan - CIP). Please see the
map below for a closer look at the priority areas. (click on an

The Canal
Maintenance Plan will allow for the City to maintain its canals
while at the same time minimizing the cost impact on taxpayers.
A copy of the plan/study is located in the City Manager’s Office for
review 954.786.4601, or a copy of the study can be purchased
through the City Clerk’s Office 954.786.4611.
