17 - Free Car Seat Safety Check Saturday Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for children and adolescents ages 1 to 21. Even more startling is that four out of five child car seats are improperly installed. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be checking children’s car seats for proper installation, safety and recall status starting Saturday February 16^th, March 15^th, April 19^th, May 17^th, June 21^st, July 19^th, August 16^th, September 20^th, October 18^th, November 15^th and December 20^th at Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue Station 24 located at 2001 NE 10^th Street (on the corner of 10^th Street and Federal Highway) from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. 24 The Blessing of the Fleet sponsored by the Pompano Beach Centennial, will be hosted by St. Martin’s Episcopal Church of Pompano Beach on Saturday, May 24, 2008 from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old tradition originating in southern European fishing communities as those that take to the sea in commercial and pleasure craft alike receive a blessing from the Bishop. Today, the tradition continues as those who fish, both commercially and for sport, seek blessings on their vessels for an abundant catch, as well as those who take to the waterways for recreation who seek safety upon the water and a safe return home.

This is a family event and there is no admission charge. Boats are requested to line up by 2:45PM just south of the Hillsboro Inlet and will be escorted south along the ICW parade route by the BSO Marine Unit and the Coast Guard Auxiliary to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church to receive a blessing as they pass by the staging area.
